For the second outing with the Blade Chroma I decided to try something a little bit more challenging. I was going to try and follow a friends RC Plane and get some footage of it in the air. Unfortunately I ran into an issue where I could not get any video signal on the ST-10+ this meant that the footage of the plane was a bit hit and miss as I was trying to guess where the plane was in relation to the camera. After the flight I realised that I hadn’t paired the video signal on the ST-10+. One thing I have noticed is that when the sun is in front of the drone you get a strobing effect from the sunlight passing through the front props, yet to work out how to resolve this issue.
Again all flying was done in ‘Angle’ mode and the height was kept under 50M,
I recently purchased a Blade Chroma GoPro Edition, the version I got actually came with the ST-10+ radio and Mk58 Video Downlink. I will be doing a full review on this in the future but in the meantime I will link to some video I have made using the Chroma and the GoPro.
This is a video of the first flight I had with the Blade Chroma, it was at a local park and I made sure to follow the instructions for calibrating the drone. I set the height limit to 55M so as to keep any potential failures within the area of the park, I also made sure to get permission from any of the people the drone flew ‘near’ to. I am still dialing in what settings on the GoPro work best with the drone as well as getting a feel for how the drone flies. As I fly planes and racing drones I find the ‘Smart’ mode of the Chroma to be very weird and counter intuitive, though for an absolute beginner I can see how it could be helpful. All my flying for this video was done in Angle mode, I have yet to test the Chroma in agility mode but I have tested the Return to home a few times in different scenarios and it has always brought the drone back to within a few meters of it’s stat location.
A few months ago I was in one of my local hobby shops and I saw a kit that looked like something you would normally have seen in the late 80’s, it was a Kyosho Sand Master. The Sand Master was part of Kyoshos new EZ Series of vehicles, they all share the same basic chassis but then have different bodies and setups, the EZ series’s claim to fame is that they can be built with just a Phillips head screwdriver which is supplied (and a wheel spanner which is also supplied). These kits are actually great kits for someone who is interested in building their own car but may not have the confidence to tackle some of the more advanced kits.
After a recent bash I lost the rear dogbone and diff drive cup , as I was driving in fine dust I decided that now would be a good time to pull down, clean and rebuild myTamiyaXB Levant . Seeing as how this was an XB Model the manual was basically just a quick blurb about the model with all the usual warnings about not driving while working a chainsaw etc etc, the only really useful bit of information was the exploded diagram and parts listing.
A few years ago I bought a box full of old RC Cars off of Ebay after a quick look I put them in a storage box and pretty much forgot about them, then recently the high winds and lousy weather here in Brisbane meant that I couldn’t get much flying done. So I thought it was a good time to start getting some of my cars up and running , while doing this I found the old box of parts and decided it was time to rebuild a few of them.
The Art-Tech Devil is sold as a Sports Trainer, however with a few small setup changes it has the ability to become a 3D trainer as well. I came across this plane while visiting WiredRC in Brisbane, after looking at a few other models I kept coming back to the Devil, I think because it reminded me of some of my old nitrotrainers. The Devil is a larger foamy with a wingspan of 1.4 meters(55 Inches) and looked like it would be a good ‘default’ plane, as well as being a stable platform with which to teach people; in fact it proved to be such a nice plane to fly I later bought a second one for my Girlfriend to learn on.
I recently had a chance to give the Parrot AR Drone a good work out and found that while it is an amazing bit of kit especially for the price it is definitely a revision 1.0 product and if there is ever a version 2.0 I believe it would be a must have product.
I was lucky enough to be given some funds to purchase a HobbyKingDuraFly Ryan STA, this is a one HobbyKings new balsa build Durafly series of planes.While foam is the building material of choice these days I still felt the need to buy this plane for the simple reason that it looks amazing, also I find that balsa models just seems to fly better. One thing I don’t miss about the old days is balsa repairs, I have rebuilt and recovered many a plane in the past and when compared to the quick and easy re-glue of a foam model balsa repairs are just a bit too time consuming and fiddly. But I saw that HobbyKing has plenty of spares and these days if a part is cheap enough I am probably going to buy a new one rather than try and fix it.
I have got my hands on a Multiplex Funcopter from WorldHobbies, the Funcopter is a 450 – 500 size fixed pitch helicopter that is based on the old LMH Corona 120 . It has been bought out by Multiplex and has been spruced up but is it as indestructible as its predecessor ? Well read on and find out.
I have had the chance to test the E-Flite UMX – The Beast for a while now and have to say the the only thing more ever inflated than the hype is the price. While you can find plenty of reviewsextolling the virtues of this little Micro, mostseem to skip some of the more obvious issues that the Beast suffers from.
